Why They Say “An Apple a Day Keeps the Doctor Away”

Why They Say “An Apple a Day Keeps the Doctor Away”

Most of us grew up hearing, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.” It sounds almost too simple to mean much, but apples really are an interesting little package of nutrition.

The Healthline article 8 Impressive Health Benefits of Apples talks about the fiber, vitamin C, antioxidants, and plant compounds found in apples, along with their potential benefits for heart health, gut health, blood sugar regulation, and overall wellness.

But there is another reason I like talking about apples in Body Bella.

I have had clients notice that on days certain foods are missing, their weight does not release in quite the same way. That does not mean one food magically causes weight release. It reminds us of something we talk about all the time in Body Bella: physiology matters.

Your body needs glucose. Sugar itself is not the enemy.

This can be difficult to believe after years of hearing that sugar and carbohydrates are automatically something to avoid. Women become afraid of fruit because they hear, “Fruit has sugar,” without being taught the rest of the story.

Yes, fruit contains naturally occurring sugar. Your body also uses glucose as an important source of energy. And a whole apple brings much more with it than sugar. It contains water, fiber, vitamins, minerals, and beneficial plant compounds.

There is another important piece too: how you eat fruit matters.

Fruit eaten by itself and fruit eaten as part of a thoughtfully composed meal do not necessarily create the same physiological response. There are ways of eating fruit that can help create a steadier post-meal blood sugar response rather than simply sending sugar into the bloodstream by itself.

That is part of what you learn in Body Bella.

We do not want you afraid of fruit. We want you to understand how your body uses it.

This is also why all fruits are not automatically interchangeable at every stage. We talked about that in our Body Bella article The Truth About Bananas - Unpeeled. Bananas are not a “bad” food, but their physiology is different from a small green apple, and there can be reasons for choosing one over another depending on what we are asking the body to do.

That distinction matters because nutrition becomes very confusing when everything gets reduced to one statement like “sugar is bad” or “fruit is healthy.”

Neither teaches you enough.

Your body is more sophisticated than that.

It requires fuel. It requires nutrients. It requires glucose. And the way foods are combined and used can influence how your body responds to them.

That is one of the larger lessons I want you to carry with you from Body Bella. We are not simply giving you a list of foods to eat and foods to avoid.

We are teaching you physiology so you can understand why.

So enjoy the apple.

There may be more wisdom in that old “apple a day” saying than we realized.
