The Woman You Were Before Everyone Needed You

The Woman You Were Before Everyone Needed You

There is a point in many women’s lives when they realize they have become very good at being who everyone else needs them to be. They are the dependable one, the capable one, the person who remembers the appointments, keeps the family moving, gets the work done, takes care of everyone, and somehow keeps going even when they are exhausted.

After enough years of that, something interesting can happen. You can become so practiced at fulfilling your roles that you stop noticing what you enjoy, what gives you energy, what matters to you, and even what feels like you anymore.

That is one reason I loved the article Freedom to Be Our Full Selves. It talks about authenticity as knowing yourself, being yourself, and allowing yourself to be seen as you really are. I think there is a beautiful connection between that idea and the work you are already doing in Body Bella.

When you begin paying attention to your body again, you are practicing something much bigger than learning what to eat. You are learning to listen. You begin noticing when you are tired instead of automatically pushing through it. You notice when you are hungry, when you feel good, what gives you energy, and what drains it. You begin recognizing patterns that may have been quietly running in the background for years.

As some of the physical noise begins to settle, another question can surface: Who am I now? Not who were you at 25, not who your family expects you to be, and not the version of you who learned to keep everyone happy. Who are you now?

Maybe you discover you want more quiet. Maybe you want to travel, dance again, spend more time outside, wear something you stopped wearing years ago, or simply sit with your coffee before immediately beginning the day’s list. Maybe you want stronger boundaries, more laughter, deeper friendships, or more time doing things that make you feel alive. These things can sound small, but they are often clues to parts of yourself that have been waiting for your attention.

The woman underneath all of those responsibilities has been there the entire time, and caring for your body can become one way of finding your way back to her. Weight release may be what first brought you to Body Bella, but some of the most meaningful changes are much harder to measure on a scale.

You begin trusting yourself again. You notice what you want. You become less willing to treat your own needs as an inconvenience. You begin making choices from the woman you are becoming rather than simply repeating the habits of the woman who was trying to get through an exhausting season of life.

Maybe the question is not, “How do I become a better version of myself?” Maybe it is, “What parts of myself am I ready to welcome back?” That is worth thinking about, because you did not come this far simply to occupy a smaller body. You are creating more room to live your life as yourself.
