Not all vegetables are grown the same. Each year, the Environmental Working Group (EWG) tests hundreds of conventionally grown produce items for pesticide residue. The vegetables on this list show the highest levels of exposure and are commonly referred to as the Dirty Dozen.

  1. Spinach
  2. Kale, collard greens, and mustard greens
  3. Bell peppers
  4. Hot peppers
  5. Celery
  6. Tomatoes
  7. Potatoes
  8. Lettuce
  9. Cucumbers
  10. Green beans
  11. Carrots
  12. Winter squash (like butternut or acorn)

These vegetables are commonly eaten with the skin or surface intact and often come from crops sprayed heavily with pesticides.

When possible, look for organic versions of these vegetables, especially if you eat them daily. Supporting your liver and detox pathways begins with what you put in your body, and this is one of the simplest upgrades you can make.
