What Most Doctors Aren’t Taught About Health

nutrition

Have you ever thought…

“If I’m smart and educated, I should know how to be healthy, so why don’t I?”

You’re not the only one.
And here’s the truth most of us were never taught.

Even in professional healthcare training, the emphasis is often on how to recognize and respond to disease, not how to build or protect health in the first place.

As a chiropractor, I was fortunate. Our education focuses deeply on physiology, function, and what supports a healthy body, not just what to do when the body breaks down. We’re trained to look at the whole system, to identify imbalance, and to work toward optimization.

But many other healthcare paths, like MDs or DOs, are structured differently. Medical school is built around diagnosing illness and managing symptoms. It’s brilliant in a crisis. But in everyday life, when you’re just trying to feel better and stay well, there’s a major gap.

Nutrition? It’s Barely Covered.

In most traditional medical programs, nutrition is not a core subject. Some physicians receive only a few hours of it in their entire education. And even that often centers on managing disease states, not preventing them.

To make things even more complex, there are states that legally restrict who can speak about nutrition, no matter how much experience or education you have.

Currently, these states have restrictive laws that limit nutrition counseling to state-licensed dietitians or those with very specific additional credentials:

Alabama, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee, and West Virginia
In these states, even chiropractors or physicians with advanced training may be prohibited from offering personalized nutritional guidance unless they meet state-specific licensing or certification standards.

So you might meet a brilliant doctor with decades of experience…
and legally, they’re not allowed to talk to you about food.

That’s Why We Need a New Conversation

This isn’t about shaming anyone. It’s about clarity.

We’ve been trained to treat illness, but not to create health.
We’ve been taught how to react, but not how to sustain.
And so many of us, doctors included, are walking around tired, inflamed, and frustrated, wondering why “doing everything right” still doesn’t feel right.

That’s why Body Bella exists.
Not to fix you.
But to help you understand what your body is actually asking for
and give you a system that makes sense.

This is the kind of learning we should’ve all had from the start.
But it’s never too late to begin.
